Department of Fine Arts
The graduate studies program in the Department of Fine Arts challenges
dedicated students to achieve their highest academic goals at Winthrop. Students
enter the
program in order to tackle new areas of investigation within a comprehensive
studio and research environment.
The M.F.A. Degree is an on-site program that encourages the
growth of the citizen artist. Candidates are expected to participate in the department and the
broader community. Candidates are expected to leave the program with the
professional and artistic skills required in an ever changing social
environment. The Department of Fine Arts
offers the 60 semester-hour terminal M.F.A. Degree in four areas
of concentration.
Candidates may elect a concentration in one of the following:
Crafts (Jewelry/Metals)
Painting
General Studio *
Sculpture

*15 semester hours each of two major areas of concentration.
The Master of Arts in Art Education (M.A.A.E.) Degree is
designed for certified art teachers who wish to continue their
professional/educational development. The program provides opportunities for
current art teachers to improve skills in studio art, research in art education
and K-12 art education pedagogy.
The 36 semester-hour program combines courses in art education, art content
(studio, history, criticism and aesthetics) and educational foundations and
psychology. Based on these courses it allows teachers to pursue studio or
research projects of personal concern.
