I. Remarks from Dean Libby Patenaude
   a. CVPA received additional $10,000 in funding for faculty professional development travel
       i. Total is now $29,000
       ii. Still not enough for all requests – but better
       iii. Please continue research and professional development activities
    b. Over the next few weeks department chairs will ask some of you to look at various spaces across campus
        i. Dinkins, Roddey, and the Coco-Cola plant)
        ii. These buildings will possibly become available to CVPA over the next few years at various times
        iii. CVPA will acquire more space – but not immediately
        iv. We know CVPA is out of space and the addition of these 3 spaces will help alleviate space concerns in the future.
        v. CVPA Deans/Chairs will continue to work on space/facilities initiatives
    c. Sun. Dec. 9 – 6:30 p.m. – 10 p.m. – CVPA holiday gathering at Dean Patenaude’s home
    d. Sabbaticals for 2008-2009
        i. Marge Moody, Fine Arts, has been granted sabbatical for Fall 2008 

II. Approval of Minutes from August 14, 2007 – approved 

III. Department/Unit Reports
      a. Department of Music – Don Rogers
          i. 10 students accepted into the SC honors band
         ii. Madrigal Feaste
             1. Sold out Saturday
             2. Friday had more attendees than in the past 20 years
        iii. Festival of Carols last night – 1,200 in Byrnes Audience
        iv. 2 new CD projects in the works (jazz combos and compositions by a Music faculty member) 

     b. Department of Theatre and Dance – Andrew Vorder Bruegge 
         i. Thurs. and Fri. Performances of Medal of Honor Rag part of the Create Carolina Arts Festival
            1. Talk backs and receptions afterwards
        ii. Johnson Theatre back on track following the fire
            1. there are workers there now working on clean-up
            2. There were no delays/cancelations of performances due to the fire
            3. Thank you to everyone for their concern and help
        iii. Close to the end of a search for an Accompanist for the dance program
            1. should start by beginning of Spring semester
        iv. Students and faculty are in the process of applications/auditions for ACFD’s regular gathering and SETC summer stock
            1. Some faculty are making presentations at these conferences
         v. Theatre & Dance retreat in January
        vi. 5 year accreditation visit for dance program – next academic year
            1. There will be an accreditation consultant on campus in April 2008 in preparation for the NASD review

      C. Department of Fine Arts – Tom Stanley
          a. 18th Annual Pottery Sale this Friday at 12 noon
          b. Tom now has new business cards
          c. Portfolio Day letters have gone out concerning scholarship offers
          d. Receiving applications for faculty painting position 

      D. Department of Design – Chad Dresbach
          a. Busy semester – Department of Design will have an Administrative Assistant Wednesday, Jan. 2
          b. This semester an exterior consultant came in to review the INDS program
              i. Larger strategic plan
             ii. 5-10 years
         c. Both INDS and VCOM are working on curricular revisions to be reviewed by CVPA faculty soon
         d. Ready for the end of Spring shows
             i. INDS show in Lewandowski Gallery
             ii. VCOM has a speaker coming in for the portfolio show 

      E. ABC Project – Christine Fisher
          a. This year the ABC Project celebrated its 20th Anniversary
              i. Ray Doughty wrote the history of ABC – 79 pages
              ii. At the celebrations, there were performances from schools and speakers
          b. Arts Education Legislation
              i. Tax relief law
              ii. Senate sub-committee
          c. Make sure all schools have grass roots support for the arts
          d. New Major program
              i. By 6th grade students have to choose a “major”
             ii. After the 8th grade they can not change their major
            iii. Colleges/universities align these clusters with what the students want to major in
                 1. ABC is trying to emphasize that the arts are important in every major
                 2. Trying to get parents to understand this and strong-arm
           e. Reauthorized No Child Left Behind
               i. Trying to ensure that the arts are not left out of this – that the arts are a core curriculum
                  1. In South Carolina, theatre is not considered an art form
           f. We need to advocate for public awareness of legislation and how it affects education and the arts
           g. Dean Patenaude – As state employees, it is important that we follow state policies when it comes to political interests/commentaries:
               i. It is fine to be interested/involved in political matters.
                  1. But, if you advocate on political matters, do so as a private citizen, not as a Winthrop employee. 
                  2. Do not use your Winthrop e-mail or mention your association with Winthrop University
              ii. SC Arts Alliance can assist with awareness of upcoming arts legislation

      F. Winthrop Galleries - Karen Derksen
          a. All full-time Fine Arts and Design faculty are eligible to apply for Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick grant exhibition project grant
              i. Deadline is Mon. Feb. 4
             ii. Faculty can collaborate with each other or with students
            iii. July 1, 2008 – Nov. 2009
         b. Creative Habit presentations
             i. Last 3 will be in Jan. 2008
         c. Faculty Exhibition is up until Jan. 31
         d. Feb. 15 – Performing Gender – Lewandowski Gallery
             i. An exhibition about gender identity and roles
            ii. In conjunction with Davidson College and private collectors
           iii. Educational program – films 

      G. Office of Special Projects – Amanda Woolwine
          a. The 2007 Medal of Honor in the Arts was a big success – thank you to each department for all their help
          b. The Spring 2008 events calendar will be ready by the start of spring classes
          c. Create Carolina Arts Festival (Southern Fried Arts and Film Festival)
              i. May 19 – June 6, 2008
             ii. Theme – elections and the political process
             iii. Charles Randolph-Wright will direct Medal of Honor Rag performances this Thurs. and Fri.

          i. 1st year faculty – there is a Mentor Protιgι session in Rutledge 127 this afternoon
         ii. Fri. January 18 following the CVPA Faculty Assembly meeting
             1. open session (drop in meeting) for all faculty who will be going through the tenure process
             2. annual report, material organization
      b. Annual Reports are due Fri. Feb. 1
      c. CVPA Graduation Reception – Fri. Dec. 14 – Rutledge Gallery
          i. This means a lot to the parents and the students, faculty please attend if you can.
      d. Curriculum Actions
          i. New on-line system
         ii. Committee not yet ready to complete the approval process
        iii. The CVPA Curriculum committee will meet next week
      e. Next CVPA Faculty Assembly meeting – Fri. Jan. 18 – 2 p.m.

Note:  There was a brief meeting of the CVPA Graduate Faculty immediately following the CVPA Faculty Assembly.

All faculty members of the College of Visual and Performing Arts who hold membership in the Faculty Conference shall be members of the Faculty Assembly.  Membership in the Faculty Conference is extended to every person who holds rank as instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, or professor at Winthrop University, with the following exceptions: lecturers, adjunct faculty, and visiting faculty are not members of Faculty Conference. The eligibility of an individual who does not hold membership in the Faculty Conference shall be determined by the Faculty Assembly.
