I. Welcome & Report from the Dean
- Donald M. Rogers
1.
Injuries
a. If an injury
occurs, whether it is a faculty member, student, or a visitor
you should first
call Campus Police at x3333.
i. For Winthrop employee injuries, you should also contact Mitzi Stewart, Winthrop's
Environmental Health and
Safety Manager, at 803-323-2328.
ii. For student injuries, you should contact Terry Sexton in
Purchasing and Risk Management at 803-323-6026.
2. Graduate Program
a. Follow-up from the Graduate Review conducted
last year
b. Jeannie Woods (Assoc.
Dean/Theatre) and Kathy Kinsey (Music) were CVPA's two representatives on the
review committee
c. The committee
reviewed the graduate program in reference to summer school offerings and marketing.
3. Enrollment
a. Fall 2005
freshman enrollment was lower than expected (960 rather than 1,000)
b. Fall 2005
retention rate dropped (financial problems? grades? Both?)
c. State
legislation is considering capping tuition rates
d. Therefore, some
plans may be put on hold due to lower available funding

A. ABC
Project – Christine Fisher

Governor has budget a 28% cut on the SC Arts Commission (Columbia)
2. The
Governor is also
considering restructuring all state museums, arts councils, archives, etc.
3. Theatre
Education Certification Requirements
a. Requirements have changed due to No Child Left Behind.
b. English teachers are now considered certified to teach
Theatre/Drama.
c. The core arts subjects are categorized as Arts, Dance, and Music (no
theatre).
d. Theatre/Drama teachers are not required to be certified as they are
with other subjects.

A. Spotlight on Art & Design
1. Jim Connell, Professor in Art and Design
a. Video presentation of Mr. Connell's trip to a
Chinese Village which is the porcelain capital of the world
B.
Professional Development
presentation: Diversity and Safe Zones, Dean Bethany Marlowe
1. The Safe Zone Program
was initiated by GLOBAL, Winthrop's Gay Lesbian or Bisexual Ally League
2. Any
Winthrop faculty or staff member can participate in the safe zone training
program
a. training session is about 1.5 hours long
b. At the end of the training session the participants can ask for a Safe
Zone Sticker to place in their office which reads:
i. Winthrop University Safe Zone. Welcome, this ZONE is SAFE
Regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, national orgin, gender,
religion, age, and ability
you will be treated and respected as a human being. The Safe Zone Program
is designed to
increase understanding and to provide identified safe spaces for everyone.
3. Training Sessions can be adapted for different groups:
a. Training Sessions have been held for Campus
Police, Orientation Assistants, Resident Directors, and Athletics
4. CVPA does have a Safe Zone statement which can be added to syllabi:

All faculty members of the College
of Visual and Performing Arts who hold membership in the Faculty Conference
shall be members of the Faculty Assembly. Membership in the Faculty Conference
is extended to every person who holds rank as instructor, assistant professor,
associate professor, or professor at Winthrop University, with the following
exceptions: lecturers, adjunct faculty, and visiting faculty are not members of
Faculty Conference. The eligibility of an individual who does not hold
membership in the Faculty Conference shall be determined by the Faculty Assembly.
