The Winthrop Alumni Association commissioned a sculpture of the university’s founder, David Bancroft Johnson, to celebrate Winthrop’s centennial in 1986. Johnson served the institution from 1886 until his death in 1928. Sculptor Earline King created the bust after studying approximately 70 photographs of Johnson from the Winthrop Archives. Originally located on front campus, the bust was relocated to the Little Chapel in 2005.
