Welcome to Winthrop
The Welcome to Winthrop program for new staff makes employees feel welcomed, encourages them to become part of the Winthrop community, and helps them to understand how employees, faculty and students contribute to the Winthrop learning experience. It acquaints new staff with various areas of the campus and gives them the opportunity to meet many of the Executive Staff and other employees during four half-day tours.
The Winthrop World Tour includes a brief overview of Winthrop’s mission statement and Vision of Distinction, a viewing of the Winthrop Through the Decades video, and information about the opportunities and resources offered to Winthrop employees. The tour, which takes place in Tillman and McBryde, includes among its stops the infamous 4th floor and its ghost stories, the bell tower, Tillman Auditorium, key offices, and meetings with the President and Vice Presidents.
The Students R Us Tour gives participants an opportunity to learn first hand how Winthrop fulfills its mission of providing an excellent education and university experience for students. They will see where students eat, live, learn and congregate. The tour begins in Joynes with a brief presentation about admissions and a visit to one of the guest suites. The tour then moves across campus to a residence hall room, a science laboratory, a smart classroom, and the offices of the Deans of Business Administration, Arts and Sciences, University College, and Visual and Performing Arts. Each of the Deans will have the opportunity to say a few words to the participants about his/her area.
The Behind the Scenes Tour includes visits to the Facilities Management Operations Center, where participants meet facilities employees, and a bus tour of the Farm area, where they see athletic fields, the Wetlands Project, the Shack, the golf course, the greenhouses, and the wooded research area. During their tour of the Coliseum new staff learn about Winthrop’s athletic programs, about opportunities to attend athletic events and ways in which they can support the Winthrop Eagles, and they have an opportunity to meet the Athletic Director and the Coaches.
The Rest of the Story Tour begins in the Dinkins Food Court with a presentation from a representative of the Council of Student Leaders about how staff contribute to the students’ university experience and how student activities can have an effect on employees. Participants tour Dinkins, meet the Vice President for Student Life and the Dean of Students, and see where many student events take place; they learn about opportunities to attend events, and how to take advantage of other services offered by Winthrop. Withers is the next stop on the tour, where they meet the College of Education Dean. They then tour Dacus and meet with the library Dean. Participants will also hear about Career Services and have an opportunity to tour the President’s garden and home. The Tour ends with a Meeting House lunch to which the President, Vice Presidents and the Deans are invited.
