Changing VMS and Windows Passwords
Your VMS password will be valid for 180 days. As the end of the period approaches, you will receive notification that your password is about to expire.
- Locate the VMS icon on your desktop. It will look like a little computer and will be green or yellow. It may say VT320, WINTHROP VMS, EAGLE, WINTHROP, or POWERTERM. Double-click on the VMS icon.
- You will be prompted for your Username: and Password:. Type your username, and your current password.
- At the $ prompt, type PASSWORD and press <Enter>. Type the current password in response to the Old Password prompt. Press <Enter>. Type a new password in response to the New Password prompt. Type the new password again in response to Verification.
The cursor will blink for awhile (you are undergoing a security check!) then a message will be displayed “… Password changed successfully in Domain LANGROUP.”
If you have any problems, please call the HelpDesk, at x2400, option 4.
If you have Windows 3.1, 95, 98, or a Mac, use http://www.winthrop.edu/system/winpass.asp in place of the following step or call the HelpDesk at x2400, option 4 for assistance.
- After you logged into your Windows NT or Windows 2000 computer, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to change your Windows NT or Windows 2000 password. In the box that appears, click Change Password. Your Old Password is the one you used to log into the computer last (the current password from Step 2). Type the new password from Step 3 above in the New Password field, and finally type the new password again in the Confirm New Password field. Click OK. You should get a message that says “Your password has been changed.” Click OK, and then click Cancel in the Windows NT/2000 Security box.
