Purpose of Organization: The Council for Exceptional Children is an organization that believes in the ability of all students to learn. We strive to provide educational success to students with disabilities and/or exceptional gifts or talents. We wish to be advocates for children with special needs to improve their quality of life and education. As a student organization, our goals are to provide professional development opportunities for those interested in or already involved in work with special needs students, to reach out to the community to bring greater awareness to the general public of Winthrop University and beyond about the many issues surrounding special needs children, and to encourage community support and involvement with special needs children.
Description of Organization: The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest international progessional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted. CEC advocates for appropriate governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides continual professional development, advocates for newly and historically underserved individuals with exceptionalities, and helps professionals obtain conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice. Our student chapter has meetings and activities each semester to support the mission of this organization!
