Brief Description of GA Positions:

q       Work closely with the Peer Mentors, the Student Director, the four staff Coordinators, and the Academy 101 Committee

q       Coordinate and organize all logistics of the Peer Mentor program

q       Complete necessary student employment financial paperwork for the Peer Mentor staff

q       Compile necessary components to the Peer Mentor notebooks

q       Serve on the ACAD 101 Committee

q       Direct the Peer Mentor recruitment selection process in early spring

q       Work with Outdoor Education to schedule all ACAD class ropes course sessions during the opening of the fall semester

q       Work with Peer Mentors and the Office of Service Learning to coordinate the ACAD service requirement, with the Peer Mentors

q       Coordinate the evening alcohol presentation for all ACAD classes

q       Work in collaboration with ACAD to incorporate the Common Book into Peer Mentor activities, curriculum, and speakers

q       Plan and organize the weekly Peer Mentor training classes

q       Plan co-curricular events to meet the needs of freshmen throughout the semester (i.e. Study breaker, Clay Café, Carowinds, etc.), including Welcome Week

q       Keep track of Peer Mentor obligations and responsibilities, along with the Peer Mentor student staff

q       Update the Peer Mentor website on a regular basis

q       Monitor grades of Peer Mentors and watch for students who fall below the 2.3 requirement and compile a list of their fall and spring grades

q       Provide necessary feedback to the Peer mentors regarding expectations, progress, and general information (class visits)

q       Plan and organize the Peer Mentor August training, with student staff

q       Coordinate the evaluations and reviews of peer mentors

q       Attend ACAD Instructor training sessions when scheduled

q       Perform all other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Students

 

Skills Required

q       Functional knowledge of Windows 2000 Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint) and FrontPage

q       Ability to work with and motivate a group of students

q       Organization, creativity and attention to detail

q       Ability to coordinate student assistant schedules for office coverage

Working knowledge of the Winthrop University Student Handbook and Winthrop computer programs, such as SIS and VMS
