Close Scholars
Established in 1998 with generous gifts from the
Springs Close Foundation, the Close Scholars Program supports the commitment of
the Springs Close Foundation to give back to the communities of York, Lancaster,
and Chester counties, as well as Winthrop's vision of enrolling "an
achievement-oriented, culturally diverse and socially responsible student body."
The idea that drives the Close Scholars Program is that service is vital to the
complete education of college students because future leaders have a civic
responsibility. Through the establishment of the Close Scholars Program, the
Springs Close Foundation, together with Winthrop University, will enable
talented and committed students to develop the social consciousness and inner
strength that comes from helping others, as well as a legacy with a rich yield
to the greater community.
Entering freshmen from South Carolina with high
academic achievement, financial need, and a demonstrated commitment to the
community are eligible to apply for the Close Scholarship. Six renewable
scholarships are available to freshmen annually. In the event that a Scholar
loses his or her scholarship, a scholarship may become available for application
to an
upperclassman
of the same class standing.
Deadline for freshmen applying for the 2007-2008
academic year is March 31, 2008 in order to receive full consideration; however,
applications will be taken until all positions are filled. The application will
not be considered complete until the Free Application for Financial Student Aid
has been filed.
