REFLECTIONS on Volunteerism and Community Service

After Alternative Spring Break 2007, students had the following things to say:

“My views on life have completely been rerouted, I've realized how much I love volunteering, and have even considered social work as a major. I met some of the funniest people in the world, gotten along with all different types of people, had something in common with 18 others, shared a brain for a hot second, dealt with annoyance and frustration calmly, and made some really awesome friends. It was definitely an experience to remember and I highly recommend it for spring breakers next year.”                 –Morgan Ryan

“How much fun I could have with such a diverse group of people…”          –Subira Whipper said this in response to a question about what she learned on Alternative Spring Break.

“I have become much more open to new people and I will definitely participate in more service learning projects.”                            –Noah Rawls said this when asked how Alternative Spring Break changed him.

“I learned that there are amazing people in the world and when people are working toward a common goal, great things can be achieved.”            –Theresa Wynd said this when asked what she learned on the trip.

“I learned that wanting to help others is an idea that will unite strangers.”                                                       - Sarah Metts said this when asked what she learned on the trip.

“Yes, I will encourage them to become involved not only in future ASB trips, but also in their communities back home and in Rock Hill.”                – Casey Lindberg said this when asked if she would encourage others to do community service as a result of Alternative Spring Break.

After spending the night outside for the Sleep-out, students reflected on the cold evening.  Here are a few comments:

I feel sorry for those who deal with being homeless every night. I also admire their strength in a way. I know I would not be able to handle this type of situation night after night.                                       - Brianna Sanders

I feel sorry for the ones that have to do this every night, especially families that include children. It's too cold for anyone to be out here. Sleeping in a cold, wet, uncomfortable box is enough to make me realize how thankful and blessed I really am and that I take things for granted. I can't even imaging being in a state up north.                                   - Kala Wilson
