Purpose of Organization
|
SEAC is a student and
youth run national network of progressive organizations and individuals
whose aim is to uproot environmental injustices through action and
education. We define the environment to include the physical, economic,
political, and cultural conditions in which we live. By challenging the
power structure which threatens these conditions, students in SEAC work
to create progressive social change on both the local and global levels.

Description of Organization
|
SEAC is dedicated to the principle of grassroots democracy.
We are part of a grassroots coalition of student and youth environmental
groups, working together to protect our planet and our future. Through
this united effort, thousands of youth have translated their concern
into action by sharing resources, building coalitions, and challenging
the limited mainstream definition of environmental issues.
SEAC was created by and continues to be organized by young activists
committed to change. SEACers use our network to organize regional
campaigns and strenthen their local work with information and support
from other groups.
SEAC has fourteen organizational principles whose primary function is to
define SEAC's vision for the organization. These principles, when
combined with the mission statement, are used to shape all major
decisions for the organization. The organizational principles are:
1. Fight environmental degradation.
2. Recognize the impact of the environment on human individuals and
communities.
3. Support human rights
4. Support animal rights
5. Demand corporate responsibility
6. Fight class inequalities
7. Fight racism
8. Fight sexism
9. Fight homophobia and heterosexism
10. Fight imperialism and militarism
11. Have a diverse membership
12. Develop an activist rather than a volunteer approach.
13. Link our issues to local, community concerns.
14. SEAC National exists to empower the grassroots through training and
education. We view national campaigns as one of the tools to accomplish
these goals. |

Planned Projects/Events
|
October: Climate
Concert - featuring several bands, solar staging, and guest speakers,
this is a free outdoor concert with the purpose of working toward the
use of sustainable energy sources on campus, as well as to raise
awareness about critical environmental issues that are poised to affect
the lives of current and future generations.
Others to be voted on:
Working with A Place For Hope to help empower the Blackmon Road
Community
Pushing for the use of more local produce by the University, with the
possibility of starting a sustainable organic garden near campus with
the use of permaculture.
Work with our brothers and sisters in Appalachia who are faced with
destructive mountaintop removal coal mining operations that are
affecting the environment, economy, and communities. This will include
a trip to West Virginia, hopefully along with students from other
campuses, to see the destruction, learn more and get to know the people
directly involved. Dates TBA
Convergences with groups in areas fighting to stop the construction of
nuclear power plants. Dates: TBA
Working with other groups to stop the corporate funding of
environmentally and socially destructive industries.
More to be discussed throughout the semester. |
