Earlier this month I shared with you a restructuring of our university administration and made clear that one of two major challenges before us centers on fundraising. I mentioned that I would act swiftly to hire an experienced professional to lead our Institutional Advancement team of Alumni, Development, and University Relations staff so that we may enhance our fundraising, relationship-building, and image-building efforts. I am pleased to announce that Dr. Danny Nicholson will be joining my senior staff as Vice President for Institutional Advancement on Nov. 1.
I met and grew to know Danny when we attended a residential higher ed leadership program at Harvard in 2007. At that time, we connected as colleagues do, sharing our aspirations and dreams during late-night study sessions and out-of-class assignments. I learned he was a fan of Boz Skaggs, had a love for people and their stories, and considered philanthropy his calling. At that time, Danny had 25 years of increasingly responsible fundraising experience at several South Carolina institutions.
Earlier this year I reconnected with Danny, who now is the vice president of advancement at Carson-Newman University in Tennessee. Through our conversations, I learned Danny’s life circumstances had brought him to a place where coming home to South Carolina would be the right decision for him and his family. As we have talked more, I have come to believe that what is right for Danny is also right for Winthrop at this critical time in our history. With Danny on our team, we gain a proven fundraising leader with contacts throughout our state, while Danny finds himself doing what he loves much closer to his childhood home.
I'm looking forward to the significant contributions Danny will make here, and I hope you will extend to him and his wife, Debra, your warm Winthrop welcome. The press release on this appointment will give you greater insight to the depth of Danny's institutional advancement experience and how he can make a positive impact on our university’s future. Do please congratulate Danny when you see him on campus later this fall.
