About ten days ago I invited you to a September 9th Town Hall meeting where Larry Williamson will provide an overview of the Knowledge Park project, Winthrop’s role in it, and future directions as this initiative unfolds.
One of the reasons for scheduling the Town Hall event late in the day on Monday the 9th was that I had been informed that the Rock Hill City Council would take up this matter at a 6 o’clock meeting that evening. At that council meeting it was to be disclosed that a master developer had been engaged for the Knowledge Park effort and that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) had been negotiated among the parties. Winthrop is a party to the MOU. Therefore, I wanted very much for you to hear details about this initiative before reading about it in the local media.
As you now know from information in Sunday’s media, the Rock Hill Economic Development Corporation, of which I am a member of the Board of Directors, will announce today the identity of the recommended master developer for the Knowledge Park project and disclose aspects of the MOU. So today you will learn from local media what I had hoped would have been disclosed to you in greater detail in person, here on campus, in advance of broader public distribution.
We will go forward with the Town Hall meeting on Monday, at 4:30 p.m., September 9th, in Dina’s Place as planned, and I hope you will join us there.
You will be informed about the commitments Winthrop has made in the MOU, the qualifications of the master developer, and the range of ideas and possibilities for Winthrop as the project moves ahead.
I also hope you understand that some of these unfolding events are beyond my control, but I will continue to work hard to include you in ongoing conversations.
