On Monday, I had the distinct pleasure of participating in my first Convocation at Winthrop. Imagine my pride and excitement looking out from the stage of Byrnes Auditorium at a sea of eager freshmen ready to kick off officially their Winthrop experiences. My husband, Larry, and I also led our first Blue Line from the ceremony to the campus community picnic. Traditions such as these knit together a community of learners, becoming a thread connecting the past to the future. Whether it’s been only a few years or a couple of decades since you experienced some of those same “firsts,” you share a bond, as I now do, with today’s Winthrop students.
In recent months, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of you, and through our conversations, I’ve been pleased to discover that Winthrop continues to have a profound impact on your lives, families, and communities. As I learn more about you, my pride and excitement grow at the thought of how our combined strengths and integrated efforts can create an exciting synergy that can only mean extraordinary things for our future. Please know that I value your thoughts and ideas on how we can advance the institution and shape a generation of Winthrop graduates who are ready for successful careers, engaged in our democratic society, responsive to local and global concerns, and grounded in values that give meaning to their lives.
To begin that dialog and to help you learn more about me until we can meet face-to-face, feel free to visit my website. Thank you in advance for your support as I embark on my own Winthrop experience!
