Finally...our work together officially begins!
I am excited beyond measure to start Winthrop's 128th academic
year with you. Larry and I have been preparing all summer to be
ready for our first of many years here at Winthrop University.
The start-up of school has always filled me with a sense of
optimism. But, this year, I am "walking on sunshine" because I have
the opportunity to work with each of you and to learn about your
hopes and dreams for Winthrop's future. To begin this important
dialog, and also to continue in the tradition of faculty and staff
engagement, I hope you will attend my Opening Address
to the campus community on Tuesday, August 13, 9:30 a.m., in
During this presentation, I will share my observations about the
challenges and key issues facing higher education today and pose a
series of questions that will frame our campus visioning discussions
over the coming months. As a way to get meaningful conversation
going, there will be a question and answer session after my speech,
followed by a social time in the Tuttle Dining Room for us to get to
know each other better.
A calendar of additional
opening activities is available online,
and I ask that you take special note of the Convocation
ceremony on Monday, August 19, at 4 p.m., in Byrnes
Convocation serves as the traditional welcome for our new
students and as their formal induction into the Winthrop University
community of learners. The Convocation ceremony will be followed by
the traditional Blue Line procession and picnic on the front lawn
for students, faculty and staff.
Please plan to attend Convocation and to join our Board of
Trustees, our honored community guests, and me in welcoming our
students to campus. Winthrop offices will close at 3:45 p.m. to
enable all faculty and staff to attend the 4 p.m. ceremony.
I look forward to seeing you at all the opening activities and
throughout the year ahead.
