ADOLPHUS G. BELK, JR.


Adolphus G. Belk, Jr., Assistant Professor of Political Science

Biography

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Adolphus G. Belk, Jr. is the son of Mrs. Azalia E. Logan-Belk and Mr. Adolphus G. Belk, Sr.  Dr. Belk earned a B.A. in African American Studies and Political Science at Syracuse University.  He graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and was listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.  Dr. Belk was also a Remembrance Scholar, a Newell Rossman, Jr. Scholar, a Martin Luther King, Jr. Award recipient, and  a Fannie Lou Hamer Award recipient during his undergraduate years.

Dr. Belk earned both his M.A. and Ph.D. in government and politics at the University of Maryland, College Park.  He now makes his home in Rock Hill, South Carolina where he teaches political science and African American Studies at Winthrop University.  His research and teaching interests include American government, African American politics, the politics of race in the United States, mass incarceration and the prison-industrial complex, and American public policy.  His work has been published in The Journal of Race and Policy and by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.  He is currently working on a book-length manuscript analyzing the politics of the American prison-industrial complex.

Dr. Belk is a member of several organizations including the American Political Science Association and the National Conference of Black Political Scientists.
