STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
2007-2008


Academic Achievements:

  • Degrees Earned. A total of 28 Political Science students received bachelors’ degrees between August 2007 and May 2008.
     
  • Excellent Students. Winthrop University Political Science majors are named to the President’s List and the Dean’s List at rates that exceed their percentage of the Winthrop University student body. Specifically:
        --Nearly fourteen percent (13.6%) of Political Science majors were named to the Dean’s List in Spring 2007 and just over five
        percent (5.71%) were on the President’s List.
        --Eleven percent (11%) of Political Science majors were named to the Dean’s List in Fall  2006 and almost five percent (4.96%)
        were on the President’s List.
     
  • Tillman Award. Christian Williams, a Political Science minor, was one of the recipients of the Tillman Award, which was presented at the May 2008 graduation, to the students with the highest Grade Point Averages in the graduating class.
     
  • College of Arts and Sciences Scholarships and Awards. Political Science and African American Studies students received numerous scholarships from the College of Arts and Sciences, including (all students are Political Science majors unless otherwise indicated):

    • Wendy Adams, Ninoska Cano and Nancy Elizabeth Kelly were the three recipients of the Lisa Hudson Evans Scholarship.

    • Linda Atiase received the John Guilbeau Scholarship.

    • Candace Porter was awarded the Joe B. Lanford Scholarship that is coordinated with the City of Rock Hill.

    • -Linda Atiase, Zachary Blum, Lauren Bohn, K. Jurée Capers, Rachel Heidelberg, Madison Hutto, Erin Miller, Cali Sandel, Elisia Stewart and Sharetta Wynn were the ten recipients of the Anita Jones Spearman Scholarship.

    • K. Jurée Capers was also one of the three recipients of the Robert M. Ward Scholarship.       

    • India Richardson, an African American Studies Minor, received the Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists     
      Scholarship.

    • Hollie Blake, a Political Science Major and African American Studies Minor, received the Glen Broach Award, which is given
      by the History Department, to the most outstanding senior who is a double major in History and Political Science.
       

  • Political Science Department Awards and Model United Nations Awards.
    • Joseph Maye was the winner of the fourth annual William J. Blough Undergraduate Essay Contest.
    • Lindsay LaPlante received the third annual Mary Jeane Byrd Award for Civic and Political Engagement.
    • K. Juree Capers was the first annual recipient of the Janice Chastain Houk Award for Undergraduate Research.
    • Bineta Diop was presented with a Distinguished Delegate Award for her representation of the Czech Republic in the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Model United Nations Conference (UNCCMUN) in October 2007. Bineta was also presented with an Outstanding Delegate Award for her representation of the Czech Republic at the Southern Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN) in Atlanta in November 2007.
    • Justin Chitwood was presented with a Distinguished Delegate Award for his representation of Norway at the UNCCMUN Conference in October 2007.
    • Jelissa Haynes was presented with an Outstanding Delegate Award for her representation of Norway at SRMUN in November 2007.
    • Martha McCoy, Ashley Dozier, Christopher Richards, James Tolley, Dwayne Greene and Malcolm Boyd all received Best Delegate Awards at the Winthrop University Model United Nations (WUMUN) in April 2008.
    • Rachel Gower was presented the Best Chair Award at WUMUN in April 2008.
    • Candace Porter received the Mary Jane Whittaker Award for being the hardest working secretariat member at WUMUN in April 2008.
       
  •  Internships: Five Political Science students completed internships during the 2007-2008 school year.

    • Hailey Davis was placed with Congressman Payne in Washington D.C.
    • Bineta Diop interned with the City of Rock Hill.
    • Lauren Johnson worked on the Obama for America Campaign for her internship.
    • Tiffany Kingery interned on the Hillary Clinton for President Campaign.
    • Joe Maye interned for South Carolina Legal Services.
       
  • Study Abroad and Washington Semester Acceptances: Four Political Science Majors studied abroad in both long-term and short-term trips in the 2007-2008 school year.

    • Chelsea Weser attended Kingston University in England.
    • Martin Branch studied at the University of Galway in Ireland.
    • Rick J. Faulks went to Mexico to study at UMN-Cuernavaca.
    • Candace Porter  and Katherine Leonard enrolled in “Women and Sustainable Development in Costa Rica” with Drs. Disney and Lipscomb, which featured a trip to Costa Rica. 
    • Hailey Davis participated in the Washington Semester program in Spring 2008.
       
  • Honors Program Participation:

    • Honors Thesis Colloquium. Joseph Maye and Reneé Thompson presented Honors Theses at the Honors Thesis Colloquium in April 2008. Political Science minor Christina Williams also presented.
    • Honors Program Degrees. Hollie Blake, Joseph Maye and Reneé Thompson all graduated with Honors Degrees at the May 2008 Commencement.
       
  • Undergraduate Research participation:

    • Professional Conference Presentations.
      • Alena James, a Biology/Political Science double major was awarded Sigma Xi/SCAS award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research for her presentation in Molecular and Cell Biology. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) also awarded Alena as the Outstanding Undergraduate Scientist at the March 2008 South Carolina Academy of Science meeting at Clemson.
      • Joe Maye presented “The Republic of Plato or Socrates?: A Defense of the Ironic Interpretation and its Socratic Genesis” at the South Carolina Political Science Association meeting in March.
      • R. Lane Lovegrove presented “End Credits: An Analysis of Contemporary Contagion Films and the Eschatology of the Apocalypse Myth” at the South Carolina Political Science Association (PSA) Meeting in March 2008. Lane also presented his paper at NCUR in April 2008.
    • Other Students Engaged in Undergraduate Research. Political Science Majors K. Jurée Capers, Alena James, Joe Maye,  and  R. Lane Lovegrove, and Political Science Minors  Christina Williams and Zachary Thurston were included in the Meeting Abstracts portion the 2008 College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Scholarship Book of Abstracts.
       
  • Student Life Awards and Recognition: Political Science majors and African American Studies Minors continue to be actively engages in community service and political activism. Their honors include:

    • Alena James won the American Legion Award, given by the Division of Student Life to honor outstanding students who display exceptional courage, companionship, character, service and scholarship.
    • Hollie Blake representing both Political Science and African American Studies, was awarded the Holly Self Drummond Award, which is given to an outstanding female that demonstrates a strong commitment to volunteerism.
    • Angelo Geter received the Sullivan Award, which is awarded to the outstanding male member of the senior class. .
    • Algierre T. Barron, an African American Studies Minor, was the recipient of the Serving Others and Reflecting Award.
    • India T. Richardson, an African American Studies Minor, received the Multicultural Student Life Award.
    • K. Juree Capers was named Homecoming Queen for 2008.
    • Amnesty International, along with advisor Dr. Jennifer Disney, also won an award from the Division of Student Life, recognizing their work during Hunger Awareness Week.
       
  • Honors Society Involvement:

    • 17.6% of the 2008 Inductees into Pi Gamma Mu, the International Social Science Honors Society, are Political Science majors or minors.
    • The Mu Pi Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha inducted 22 new students in April 2008.
    • Mu Pi also received a grant for $1,250.00 from the National Chapter to fund “Shooting for Safety: Should We or Should We Not Have the Right to Bear Arms?” a forum discussion on the right to bear arms that included faculty and distinguished members in the community.
    • The Mu Pi Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha sponsored many events throughout the school year, including.
      • A workshop entitled “How to Prepare for Law School” to help students desiring to attend law school upon graduation of college make sense of the application process.

      • A Graduate School Workshop led by Dr. Lipscomb to answer questions that students have about the GRE and the graduate school application process.

      • Pi Sigma Alpha held the Debate of Ideas on Marriage Event that involved students from Amnesty International, GLOBAL, Pi Sigma Alpha, Socialist Student Union and the Young Republicans along with faculty members to discuss same sex marriage. The students in attendance were able to cast a vote either for or against same sex marriage.

      • Along with the Student Environment Action Coalition, Pi Sigma Alpha co-sponsored a “Green Concert.”

      • Pi Sigma Alpha collected over 200 pounds of books, food, movies and toiletries to be donated to the troops serving in Iraq. The chapter also raised $250.00 to cover the cost of shipping the supplies.

      • The individual members of Pi Sigma Alpha offered Undergraduate Peer Advising.

      • Pi Sigma Alpha helped sponsor Dr. Cedric Jones to talk about his book From Revolutionaries to Race Leaders: Black Power and the making of African American Politics.

      • The Mu Pi Chapter also helped sponsor the presentation “Africa and Global Politics of Hunger” during Winthrop University’s Hunger and Food Justice Week.

      • Three members of Pi Sigma Alpha attended a forum that local high school students attended and asked questions about how youth can get involved in elections.
         

  • Graduate and Professional School Admissions and Employment:

    •  Current Students:

      • Lane Lovegrove accepted a position in Summer 2007 as operations manager of the Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory.

    • Recent Graduates:
      • Christina Williams, a Political Science minor, will attend the University of South Carolina’s Law School.

      • Justin Chitwood will be starting Air Force Officer Training.

      • Oyinadamola Samlami received a job as a private school teacher in an elementary school in Charlotte.

      • Alena James will enroll in the Master of Science in Biology program at Winthrop University.

      • Hollie Blake will be a community Organizer for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

    • Alumni:

      • Shalai Coakley is the new regional manager for Marriott Hotels based in Charlotte.

      • Tiffany Davis Corbett began work on her Master’s of Business Administration Program in Spring 2008 at the University of Oregon, Corvallis.

      • Regina Wright was admitted into the Monterey Institute of International Studies where she will attain her Master’s in International Policy Studies with a specialization in International Negotiation and Conflict Resolution.

      • Summer Hanna was accepted to the Ph.D. Program in Applied Chemisty at Wake Forest University with a full tuition waiver and a $22,000/year stipend.

      • Daniel Leimer received his Master’s degree in Biology at Winthrop University in May.

      • April Hershey Lovegrove is the Executive Assistant to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

      • Samantha Howe is a staff member with the American Model United Nations in Chicago and is a subject matter expert for the Home Government Department of the American Model United Nations.

      • Will Telligman was accepted to the Florida Coastal Law School with scholarships. Will currently works as the Legislative Affairs Assistant for the International Dairy Foods Association in Washington, D.C. He also is an amateur pilot.

      • Matt Wagner is currently serving in Iraq as the Artillery Advisor for the Military Transition Team (MiTT).

      • Jeremy Winkler currently works as the Legislative Correspondent/Legislative Assistant to Rep. Gresham Barrett.

      • Marit Majeske is currently the Deputy Finance Director for Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL).

      • Andrea Tetreault was with Senator Conrad in Washington D.C.

      • Willie Lyles III is Executive Director of the Freedom Center in Rock Hill. The Freedom Center sponsors numerous community events, and Willie was instrumental in bringing former President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton to Rock Hill in the last year. Willie is also Third Vice Chair of the York County Democratic Party.

        •  A total of six alumni joined us in April to judge the 32nd Model United Nations conference. Among them were Stanley Williams, a social studies teacher at York Comprehensive High School, who created a Model UN team to complete at the Winthrop University conference; Jason Allen, who works at Muzak in Fort Mill; and Jimmy Fitzpatrick, who is enrolled in the MAT program at Winthrop University.
