PLEN, Public
Leadership Education Network, is accepting applications for
semester-long internship programs in Washington, DC. PLEN is “the only
national organization whose sole mission is preparing women for
leadership in the public arena.” (from PLEN brochure). PLEN is also
hosting two one-week seminars in Washington, DC in March, entitled
“Watch Congress at Work,” and a one wee seminar in May entitled “Women
and International Policy Seminar.” For more information about these

The Charlotte Mayor’s
International Cabinet is looking for part-time interns (about 2
afternoons/week) to work on projects for the Mayor’s International
Cabinet. Projects include planning the annual awards banquet,
sponsorship drive and newsletter. Other projects may also arise.
Interns must be self-starters and happy to work independently. The
Mayor’s International Cabinet works closely with the mayor’s office
and other officials in the City of Charlotte. Internships are unpaid.
Interns also must attend the monthly cabinet meetings (early morning,
1st Thursday of the month). The internship supervisor will
be happy to contact professors to explain a course absence. If you are

Advanced Undergraduates:
Internship Program
Sponsor: Central Intelligence Agency
Synopsis:
The sponsor offers
a co-op program for undergraduate students undergraduates studying a
wide variety of fields, including engineering, computer science,
mathematics, economics, physical sciences, foreign languages, area
studies, business administration, accounting, international relations,
finance, logistics, human resources, geography, national security
studies, military and foreign affairs, political science and graphic
design. Applicants will be given the opportunity to participate in
the vital work of the Agency, to gain unmatched experience and to
become acquainted with professionals in the intelligence field. At the
same time, the Agency will be able to assess the recipient's potential
for future permanent employment. Applicants will work on an
alternating semester or quarterly basis and are expected to spend a
minimum of three semesters or four quarters (this can include a summer
tour) on the job prior to graduation.

Synopsis: Full and part time positions (14-40 hours/week) paid
and unpaid based in the Washington, DC area. The researcher compiles
information on companies, industries and issues. The researcher also
assists the campaign in other capacities such as worker and community
outreach and helping plan worksite actions.

Anne Armstrong Leadership Award
Sponsor: Center for Strategic and International Studies
Synopsis:
The award recognizes undergraduates
who demonstrate strong
potential for leadership in the fields of
international
affairs. The award ($4,500) is given to enable recipients to serve as
full-time interns at the Center for Strategic and
International Studies (CSIS) during any fall or summer term.
Candidates must meet the following criteria: an undergraduate
student of at least sophomore standing at the time of their
application. Graduating seniors must pursue their internship within
six months of completing their education; major field(s) of study
related to public policy and/or international affairs; grade point
average of 3.5 in their major field(s); strong written and oral
communication skills; and demonstrated leadership potential as
indicated by their involvement in extracurricular activities.

Synopsis:
In addition to working on specific research projects, interns
are exposed to other important intellectual and career development
opportunities. All interns participate in a Sacramento orientation,
including a tour of the state capitol and an introduction to
California state policy by our government affairs staff. PPIC also
provides training for each intern with the Institute of Governmental
Sciences library at the University of California, Berkeley, which
allows access to many important databases, journals, and statistical
datasets. Throughout their stay at PPIC, summer interns have the
opportunity to meet with researchers to discuss careers in policy
research and with communications staff to learn about outreach
activities. Interns may also join research associates at their regular
meetings and are invited to attend PPIC events, including our public
affairs programs and research briefings. The summer intern program is
structured to include an orientation meeting, as well as opportunities
for evaluation and feedback at the midpoint and the end of the
program. In addition, all interns give an institute-wide briefing
about their summer projects.

Arctic Journey:
Inuit Leaders in a Global Environment
Sponsor: Syracuse University
Synopsis: Students earn six credits of Political Science. Three
hours focus on the impact of global climate change on the Artic Region
and three hours focus on Inuit (native people) Political Development
and Governance. Program dates are May 28-June 22. Students are
required to pay travel costs (which includes airfare, lodging,
excursions and most meals) and tuition.
Scholarships are available based on financial need; some scholarships
are available for persons of Native American heritage.

Undergraduate Summer Policy Internship
Sponsor: Georgia State University
Synopsis: The summer
policy internship is a seven-week learning program for undergraduate
students entering their senior year. Interns work with faculty members
on policy research projects in the school's research centers.
Internships are available for a select number of students who have
demonstrated overall academic achievement, as well as an interest in
an area of public policy. Areas of study include environmental
economics, international economics, state and local governance, public
financial management, education and education reform, health care, and
many other topics vital to a functioning society.

Graduating Seniors, Graduate Students and Recent College Graduates
Sponsor: AFL-CIO Organizing Institute
Synopsis: In search of graduating seniors interested in careers in the
Labor Movement as organizers. The program is an intense weekend
classroom training followed by a paid 12-week Apprenticeship Program.
Applicants are eligible and can apply to any of the weekend trainings.
Upon completion of the Apprenticeship Program, 90% of the participants
are hired into positions as union organizers with AFL-CIO affiliate
unions. Starting salaries, depending on the union, range between
$35000-$40000 annually, plus excellent benefits.

to work as summer interns. Duties include coordinating the summer boot
camp, and working on other NOI activities. The summer internship PAYS
$1,000/semester. Academic credit may be arranged through Winthrop
