New Student Orientation

Freshmen Orientation

Purpose of Freshmen Orientation

Freshmen Orientation is a required, two-day residential experience at Winthrop University to ensure that incoming freshmen have a successful transition from high school to college.  The main purpose of Orientation is to provide new students with the information, support and resources necessary to begin their academic journey.  It is also a time to explore opportunities to live, learn and lead on the Winthrop campus and in surrounding communities.  During Orientation, students will begin engaging in the campus community by:

  • Completing a class schedule and registering for classes;
  • Receiving comprehensive academic advising;
  • Interacting with upperclassmen, student leaders, faculty, staff and peers;
  • Gaining a better understanding of Winthrop University programs, policies and procedures, along with the purpose of higher education;
  • Discussing relevant issues to the first-year collegiate experience such as diversity, deep learning, academic integrity and the Winthrop University Common Book Project;
  • Exploring events, educational programs and activities offered during Winthrop Welcome Week in August.
