New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation

Orientation is a program that is designed to assist new students and their families in adjusting to life as a student at Winthrop University. The program promotes discussion among new students and their families, continuing students, and faculty and staff on the expectations and perceptions of the campus community.

Freshmen Orientation

Freshmen Orientation is a required two-day overnight program beginning at 8 a.m. on day one and ending at approximately 5 p.m. on day two. During Orientation, students are paired with an Orientation Leader to receive first-hand information and experiences. Freshmen will meet other freshmen, stay overnight in a Residence Hall, meet with and plan their fall schedule with an academic advisor and register for classes.

Please note that the Fall Freshmen Orientation session (Session V) is not an overnight session. Residential students will move directly into their assigned residence hall room on the morning of Day 1. Commuter students will return to their off-campus residence at the end of the program on Day 1 and return in the morning for the Day 2 events and to register for fall classes.

Transfer Orientation

Transfer Orientation (Full Day Session) is a one-day program beginning at 8 a.m. and ending around 4 p.m. The session includes experiences designed to allow students to learn about resources, complete course evaluations, meet with academic advisors and register for classes. Transfer Orientation Leaders and Adult Student Mentors are paired with groups of students to assist them with their transition to Winthrop University.

Advising/Registration Only is an opportunity for transfer students already familiar with Winthrop University to come to campus to be advised and register for classes for the fall semester. Students will also have the opportunity to complete various tasks that will help make their transition into the University community a smooth one.

Family Orientation

Family Orientation is held in conjunction with each Freshmen and Transfer Full Day Orientation session for parents and family members of new students. Family members are encouraged to attend Family Orientation to learn more about Winthrop and ways they can help support their student as they transition into the Winthrop Community.
