New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation

Orientation is a program that is designed to assist new students and their families in adjusting to life as a student at Winthrop University. The program promotes discussion among parents, new students, continuing students and faculty and staff on the expectations and perceptions of the campus community.

Freshmen Orientation

Freshmen Orientation is a required two-day overnight program beginning at 8 a.m. on day one and ending at approximately 5 p.m. on day two. During orientation, students are paired with an Orientation Leader to receive first-hand information and experiences. Freshmen will meet other freshmen, stay overnight in a residence hall, meet with and plan their fall schedule with an academic adviser and register for classes.

Transfer Orientation

Transfer Orientation (Full Day Session) is a one-day program beginning at 8 a.m. and ending around 4 p.m. The session includes experiences designed to allow students to learn about resources, complete course evaluations, meet with academic advisers and register for classes. Transfer Orientation Leaders are paired with groups of students to assist them with their transition to Winthrop University.

Advising/Registration Only is an opportunity for transfer students already familiar with Winthrop University to come to campus to be advised and register for classes for the fall semester. Students will also have the opportunity to complete various tasks that will help make their transition into the university community a smooth one.

Family Orientation

Family Members of Freshmen are encouraged to take advantage of Family Orientation. Family Orientation occurs the first day of Freshmen Orientation. Activities are planned to help parents and family members learn about campus services, meet campus administrators and other new families.

Family Members of Transfer Students are welcome to attend Transfer Orientation with their student. There will be a Parent and Family Session held after the welcome that will include representatives from various campus services. An optional campus tour will follow this session. Families are also invited to join students for lunch for a nominal fee. There is no separate registration or fee required for family members of transfer students.

Orientation Parking

Parking for orientation is in the gravel lot at the corner of Alumni Drive and Founders Lane
