Career Opportunities for Students Earning Degrees in Human Nutrition

The BS in Human Nutrition - Didactic Program in Dietetics degree and the Dietetic Internship prepare students for positions in nutrition and dietetics, including medical nutrition therapy, community nutrition and food systems management. Careers for nutrition graduates may begin in a hospital, business, skilled nursing facility, government or community service agency, or the military. The fields of nutrition and dietetics are expanding and experiencing changes. These changes have resulted in a demand for qualified employees that exceeds the number of graduates. Approximately 95% of Winthrop students who complete an accredited dietetic internship are quickly employed in their field, and many are being offered jobs prior to graduation.

Some students may elect to pursue the BS in Human Nutrition - Nutrition Science degree option.  Graduates with this degree option often choose to further their education in pursuit of a professional degree.  Upon completion of the program students meet or exceed academic requirements for further study in medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, and physician's assistant and pharmacy programs.  This degree is designed to provide a strong foundation in the natural sciences, math, and humanities and social sciences for those wanting to apply to medical school or dental school.  The degree also requires coursework in the chemical and biological sciences for those interested in applying to pharmacy school.

Still other students may be interested in the BS in Human Nutrition - Food Systems Management option. Students completing this program are prepared for entry-level positions in food systems administration.  Career opportunities are available in both institutional and commercial food service settings.  Graduates are recruited by food systems management companies.  Sales positions with food and equipment companies offer additional career opportunities.
