Judy Harper Thomas, MS, RD
Instructor of Human Nutrition, Dietetic Internship Director

Judy Harper Thomas has been an instructor in the Department of Human Nutrition since 1994.   Prior to her current position at Winthrop University, she served as a lecturer professor in the Department between 1983 and 1994.  Mrs. Thomas teaches courses in normal and clinical nutrition.  As of July 1998, she  assumed the role of Director of the Winthrop Dietetic Internship. 

Professor Thomas received her Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition and Foods from Virginia Polytechnic and State University in 1983 where she was a member of the Phi Sigma Biological Honor Society.  She graduated cum laude with her B.S. degree in Foods and Nutrition from West Virginia University in 1979.  Her research interests include nutrition education of school age children and fat intake and characteristics of eating patterns.

As a Registered Dietitian, Professor Thomas is a member of the American Dietetic Association and the Dietetic Educators of Practitioners practice group.  She is active in the Catawba Dietetic Association (CDA) and is faculty sponsor for the Student Dietetic Association at Winthrop University.  Professor Thomas served as the President of the South Carolina Dietetic Association (SCDA) for the term of 1999-2000.

Professor Thomas has been recognized by CDA as Outstanding Dietitian of the Year and Recognized Dietitian of the Year. She was the SCDA Outstanding Dietitian of the Year in 1999 and has received two commendation awards for  community service from SCDA.  Her professional work experience includes renal dialysis, long-term care, home healthcare, nutrition education of elementary school children (NET grant), hospital dietetics, maternal and child nutrition programs, and nutrition therapy with children with diabetes, developmental disorders, and phenylketonuria.
