About New Start

New Start is a service program that assists adult students with the admission process and provides ongoing support and information. A simple call or visit gets you started; staff members explain admission procedures and answer questions may you have.
To apply for admission to Winthrop as a New Start student, you must be age 25 or older by the first day of classes for the term for which you are applying. You must also be seeking a degree by enrolling in college for the first time, continuing undergraduate work begun in the past or seeking a second undergraduate degree.
Freshman applicants will be evaluated for admission based upon high school performance. You must have earned a high school diploma or passed the high school equivalency exam (GED). Freshman applicants who graduated after 1988 must also satisfy the state’s high school prerequisite requirement.
Transfer applicants will be evaluated based upon their cumulative performance in college. Official transcripts from each regionally accredited institution must be submitted to Winthrop University whether transfer credit was earned or is desired. Transfer credit is evaluated by each academic unit after you are admitted.
Second Bacculaureate applicants (who have earned a 4-year undergraduate degree and who wish to earn another undergraduate degree) will be evaluated based upon their cumulative performance in college. Official transcripts from each regionally accredited institution must be submitted to Winthrop University whether transfer credit was earned or is desired. Transfer credit is evaluated by each academic unit after you are admitted.
Undergraduate Non-Degree Applicants are those who wish to take undergraduate courses but do not plan to pursue a Winthrop degree. These students must apply for admission and submit the appropriate credentials. Note: Students admitted under the undergraduate non-degree classification may not change their status to degree-seeking without submitting an application and satisfying regular admissions requirements.
Once admitted as a degree-seeking student, you will be assigned an academic advisor who will assist you in planning your class schedule and determining what courses you need. If you are uncertain as to your degree choice, you may enter Winthrop as a pre-major and make your degree choice later.
As you consider pursuing your education, we encourage you to consider the New Start program. You will discover the time you have spent away from school has actually made you a better student. Faculty tell us adult students are experienced, inquisitive, and motivated. As a result, they get the most from their education and perform well academically. We hope you will seriously consider our program. You will be glad you did.
