How to use RSS news feeds

To subscribe to RSS ("Really Simple Syndication") feeds, you must use an RSS aggregator—often called an RSS reader or news reader. An aggregator downloads content from other sites and then displays a list of headlines on your personalized webpage, or within a stand-alone software application. When you click one of the headlines, you're directed back to the site where the article originated, such as winthrop.edu/news. Most aggregators update your headline list automatically, so you're always shown the most recent content.

Using My Yahoo!, My MSN or any other online service

Two of the most popular free RSS services are offered by My Yahoo! and My MSN. They compile feeds from various Internet sources and list the articles on personalized webpages.

To add any of Winthrop's news feeds to any of the online services, simply choose the feed(s) you want at the top of this page or on the Winthrop University News and Events page and click the appropriate button. For example, if you're a My MSN subscriber, click one of the My MSN buttons to add a feed automatically.

To sign up for one of these services, or for more information, visit their respective sites:

Using stand-alone RSS software

If you use a stand-alone RSS reader, such as SharpReader or FeedDemon, there are two ways to subscribe to Winthrop's news feeds:

  • At the top of this page or on the Winthrop University News and Events page, click the XML button button for the RSS feed you want. If your reader is configured to accept feeds automatically, the feed should be added to your RSS reader's subscription list. If not, clicking the button will open a new browser window containing HTML code. Simply copy the feed's URL from the browser address bar and paste it into your RSS reader's subscription field.
  • Copy and paste the feed URL(s) into your RSS reader's subscription field. This option is appropriate if your reader isn't configured to subscribe to feeds automatically, or if the XML button option does not work.

Using Mozilla Firefox

If you use the Mozilla Firefox Web browser, you can subscribe to RSS feeds by clicking the Mozilla Firefox RSS icon icon on any page where it appears. This will add a link for that particular feed to your browser's Bookmarks menu. Clicking the bookmark will display a list of available articles, which you can then access as you would any other bookmarked webpage.
