Winthrop Remembers 9/11 Victims During Seventh Anniversary
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Thursday will mark the seventh anniversary of
the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on our nation.
Work on the Tillman Tower temporarily has suspended Winthrop’s
ability to mark this anniversary with its traditional tower chimes.
However, in the spirit of reflection that is an integral part of a
learning community, Winthrop will hold a short ceremony at the
Tillman Loop flagpole shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.
At 8:46 a.m., the time at which history records the first attack on
the World Trade Center was made in 2001, Winthrop trumpet
performance major Marshall Woody, a senior from Belton, S.C., will
play "Taps" at the flagpole.
In addition, members of the College Republicans, York County GOP,
Psychology Club and Cooperative Student Fellowship will put out
nearly 3,000 mini-American flags in front of Byrnes Auditorium,
beginning around 8 a.m. The flags represent the victims who died in
the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the
Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and in Pennsylvania.
Those assembled will have a prayer and reflection time for people to
participate at 9:11 a.m. and then 9:11 p.m. In the morning ceremony, Mary Kat Enochson
of the Canterbury Association will speak. That night Meagan
Schmidt, a sociology major originally from East Hampton, N.Y.,
who lost family and friends in New York, will speak, as well as
Rev. David Brown of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church, the Rev. Narcie
Jeter of the Wesley Foundation and John O'Kain of the Presbyterian
Student Association.
