New
Music Ensemble Holds Inaugural Concert
April 18, 2008
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Out of Bounds Ensemble, the newly
formed Resident New Music Ensemble at Winthrop University’s
Department of Music, will present its inaugural concert on
Saturday, April 19 at 3 pm in the Barnes Recital Hall
on the campus of Winthrop University.
The Out of Bounds Ensemble is the first and only ensemble in
the Charlotte area that specializes in music written during
the 20th and 21st century. The founding members of
the ensemble are Tomoko Deguchi (pianist), Mark
Lewis (composer/pianist), and Ron Parks
(composer) all assistant professors at Winthrop
University’s Music Department, Craig Bove (composer)
chairman of the Music Department at Central Piedmont
Community College, and Geoffrey Whitehead (conductor/tubist)
the conductor of Charlotte Civic Orchestra.
The ensemble’s members consist of professional musicians
from the greater Charlotte area, many of which perform
regularly in Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and with other
professional organizations.
The April 19 concert includes a solo violin work by
Craig Bove, a solo piano piece by John Corigliano, a flute
and tuba duet by Walter Hartley, and the first seven
movements of Pierro Lunaire by Arnold Schoenberg. The
performers are Tomoko Deguchi (piano), Lorraine Gorrell
(voice), Nick Lampo (cello), Mark Lewis (piano), Reese
Manceaux (clarinet), Judy Meister (violin), Amy Orsinger
Whitehead (flute), and Geoffrey Whitehead (conductor/tuba).
The Out of Bounds Ensemble’s first concert will be
free and open to the public,
thanks to the generous support of
Don Rogers, chair of Winthrop's
Department of Music, and the
volunteer musicians.
