Fulbright Recipient Karen Stock to Teach in China

Karen Stock
ROCK HILL, S.C. — Karen Stock, assistant professor of fine arts, will leave Aug. 23 to spend the fall semester teaching Western art history at Beijing Normal University in Beijing, China, through the Fulbright Scholar Program.

The Fulbright Scholar Program, America’s most widely recognized and prestigious international exchange program, annually sends more than 800 faculty and professionals overseas. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.

Selection for the Fulbright is highly competitive and merit based, and seeks only qualified candidates who are committed to building a mutual understanding between people of the U.S. and the rest of the world.

Stock earned a selection based on her academic and teaching qualifications, scholarly publications and letters of recommendation. "The Fulbright is a very competitive award, and the opportunity to live in China is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I am going not just as an academic, but also as an unofficial ambassador and as a student of another culture," Stock commented.

Stock joined Winthrop in 2004. She holds a B.A. from New College and a M.A. and Ph.D. from New York University.
