Winthrop Welcomes Disc Golfers for U.S. Disc Golf Tournament

ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the 10th consecutive year, Winthrop University will host the U.S. Disc Golf Tournament near the Winthrop Coliseum.

The 2008 championship is expected to attract more than 160 top professionals from the United States, Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Finland, Norway and Japan. Champions Ken Climo and Barry Schultz, who have combined to win eight of the nine tournaments held on the Winthrop course, will compete in the tournament from Wednesday through Saturday.

More than 100 volunteers and spotters help with the tournament, according to tournament director Jonathan Poole.

Winthrop’s disc golf course was developed in 1991 with guidance by Harold Duvall, a two-time former world disc champion who lives in Rock Hill. He proposed the lake area for the course site and collaborated with university administrators on construction.

A single day pass is $5, while a VIP pass is $25. Children 12 and under are admitted free. The first 1,000 ticket holders will receive a free tournament disc. For more information, visit www.usdgc.com.
