HEADLINESWinthrop Succeeds with Tuition Cap While New State Cuts May Be Ahead - (07/01/08)The good news for Winthrop University students and parents is that officials were able to trim their spending plan enough to keep tuition and fee increases for Fall 2008 a bit below a self-imposed cap, despite a reduction in state funding support this year. The bad news is that state revenue projections in Columbia are still in flux, with legislators last week signaling additional cuts for all state agencies may lie ahead. Read More » Winthrop University officials want students and their parents to know two things. Despite a national and state economic situation that is more troubling than any encountered in decades, Winthrop is setting its own cap on tuition and fee increases for Fall 2008. Those costs will increase no more than 8.7 percent. The actual rate will be set next month, in time for formal bills to be mailed to students and families July 7-15. Tuition and fee increases continue to be a direct result of further declining support from state legislators. Winthrop’s allocation from the state for next year will be less than it received in 2000-2001, with no adjustment for inflation or Winthrop’s larger current enrollment. Each student was asked to bring a book to donate to children fed at the York County Summer Feeding Program.
