V-Day Event on Feb. 6 to Create Awareness about Violence Against Women

ROCK HILL, S.C. - In honor of V-Day to stop violence against women and girls, Winthrop’s honorary theatre organization Alpha Psi Omega will present “A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer” on Feb. 6.

The 8 p.m. event will take place at the Johnson Mainstage Theatre in Johnson Hall.

Cast members for the event will read 12 monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights. The stories range from growing up in a household of women, to childhood experiences of sexual assault, to black women commanding respect, and to topics covering women and girls in other countries, such as Cambodia and Darfur.

Those participating are male and female theatre majors, non-majors and one staff member, Brenda Floyd. The students are: Cecily Bigham, Dennis DeJesus, Melissa Frierson, Lawrin Green, Sydney Moore, Morgan Overcash, Briana Parks, Storm Smith, Cayci Andrews and David Hutto.

Organizer Amy Evans, the V-Day chair for Alpha Psi Omega, said the two-hour show will contain adult content and so will not be suitable for children. A Power Point presentation also will be shown about the Republic of the Congo.

Tickets are $5. Proceeds will benefit Safe Passage in Rock Hill which works with the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
