ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Mu Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has started collections at Winthrop University to aid earthquake victims of Haiti.

Haitian officials have predicted a horrific death toll of more than 100,000 in the wake of the 7.0-magnitude quake Tuesday that left most of the capital Port-au-Prince in rubble.

President Brittany V. Williams, a biology major from Aiken, S.C., said the sorority will accept donations at the Dinkins Student Center and will provide jugs in every residence hall until Jan. 22.

Sorority members also will gather donations at its 102nd birthday celebration at McBryde Hall on Jan. 15 from 8-10 p.m. and again at its dance-a-thon on Jan. 16 at 10 p.m. at the Student Activity Center.

All donations will be sent to the local chapter of the American Red Cross at 200 Piedmont Blvd., Rock Hill, SC 29732. Checks can be made to the American Red Cross with reference to the Haiti Relief Fund.
