ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop Galleries will promote the diverse artistic talents of father-son artists Jerry and Robert Walden, Winthrop's student-artists and South Carolina's K-12 students with several exhibitions opening in January and February.
To celebrate the exhibitions, the first of the spring 2010 season, Winthrop Galleries will host a winter opening/awards reception on Friday, Jan. 29, at 6:30 p.m. in Rutledge and Patrick Galleries.
"Walden Twice, Walden Twice: A Father-Son Exhibition" is a 2-D exhibition of the artwork of Robert Walden, a practicing artist who lives in New York City, and his father Jerry, former chair of the Department of Art and Design at Winthrop. The Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery exhibit will highlight Jerry Walden's paintings – he is a sculptor and printmaker as well – and Robert's trademark ontological road maps, a series of intricate line drawings. "Walden Twice" will mark the first time father and son have exhibited their work together.
The "22nd Annual Undergraduate Juried Exhibition" will open in Rutledge Gallery. Juror Brent Skidmore, a sculptor, studio furniture maker and longtime teacher, will select an exhibition of student-artists’ work from a variety of disciplines such as painting, drawing, sculpture, jewelry/metals, photography, ceramics, illustration, printmaking, graphic and interior design. Skidmore, a native of Kentucky, is director of the UNC-Asheville Craft Campus and has shown his work across the U.S., Finland, the U.K., Canada and Dubai, UAE.
Both "Walden Twice" and the "Undergraduate Juried Exhibition" run Feb. 1-March 4, and Jerry and Robert Walden will deliver a joint talk on as part of the Gallery Talk Series. The talk will be held Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in Patrick Gallery prior to the winter opening/awards reception.
Prior to the Jan. 29 reception, the "South Carolina Schools Photography Competition," a juried art exhibition, will open Jan. 19 in the Lewandowski Student Gallery. Paul Murphy, photography teacher at Charlotte Country Day School, will serve as judge for the show, which will showcase the 30 best original photographs taken by K-12 students in South Carolina. The exhibition continues through Feb. 4.
NOTE: Due to inclement weather, the Jan. 30 awards reception for the S.C. Schools Photography Competition winners has been postponed until Saturday, Feb. 6, at noon.
From Feb. 15-Feb. 25, the "M.F.A Works in Progress" exhibition will be on display in Lewandowski Student Gallery.
Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday (closed on weekends).
