ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop students will work the telephones from Jan. 23-March 2 for the Loyalty 2006 Phonathon.
More than 60 students have been hired to contact alumni and parents about Winthrop activities, as well as to solicit them for financial support. The goal for this year’s phonathon is $200,000, which will go toward academic scholarships, rewards for outstanding faculty and staff and Alumni Association activities.
Students will make their calls Monday-Thursday from 6-9 p.m. This year’s phonathon is coordinated by Kelly Ryan, a Winthrop senior set to graduate in December. She has worked with the phonathon since her freshman year at Winthrop.
The theme is "The Amazing Race at Winthrop," which emphasizes Winthrop’s history and its modern advances.
"It’s so important for our student callers to have the necessary tools to make effortless and knowledgeable conversation with the older classes. However, we cannot forget about the most recent graduates of Winthrop University which is why we have placed emphasis on current events as well," Ryan said.
She added that she is excited about the talented and motivated group of students selected for this year’s phonathon. "I have high expectations for the goals that will be reached over the next six weeks. Our calling team is dedicated and determined to have a successful phonathon," she added.
