ROCK HILL, S.C. - A young couple tried to steal the purse of a Winthrop student as she was standing in front of the Sims Science Building on campus around 12:30 a.m. this morning.

Winthrop Campus Police have notified students through an alert system to watch for the couple and possibly their car, an older model gold-colored Chevy Caprice Classic. Chief Frank Zebedis asked that students be watchful in their surroundings, particularly at night.

The female student told police that she saw a gold car drive past twice as she stood in front of Sims. Shortly after the second pass, a young black male and black female approached the student. As the couple talked to the female student, the young man grabbed the student’s purse and tried to pull it off her arm. The student screamed, causing the suspects to flee on foot toward Founders Lane.

A witness saw a gold car leave the area shortly afterwards with its headlights off.

The young man is believed to be between 18 to 23 years old, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 150 pounds. He wore dark-colored shirt and pants. The young woman was around 17 to 22 years old, about 5 feet 5 inches tall and 120 pounds. She had her hair pulled up in a ponytail and wore a black zipper jacket and blue jeans.
