ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Winthrop/Carolinas Wind Orchestra, conducted by music professor Bill Malambri, departed today to perform at the VIII International Festival of Music Bands in Malgrat de Mar, Spain. The 90+ member wind orchestra will travel to Spain on Oct. 10 and will return on Oct. 17.
The orchestra consists of Winthrop faculty and undergraduate and graduate students, and a wide variety of regional musicians. The group will perform Oct. 13 in Malgrat de Mar and on Oct. 14. Both concerts will feature a wide variety of American and Spanish-influenced music, including the world premiere of “Flare,” a new work composed specifically for the occasion by Winthrop composer and assistant professor of music, Ron Parks.
“Flare, a fanfare for wind orchestra, was written as an expression of the excitement and joy that we all feel on the occasion of this wonderful opportunity,” said Parks.
The trip was made possible through support from Winthrop’s Department of Music and the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
