ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop's Department of Theatre and Dance will hold a special "thank you" dance performance on Nov. 14 in Johnson Hall to honor those who helped save and restore the main stage during a recent fire. The 8 p.m. Winthrop Dance Theatre concert is free and open to the public.
Andrew Vorder Bruegge, department chair, said the Rock Hill Fire Department, Winthrop Facilities Management Office and restoration company employees have been extended a special invitation to attend. This will be the first time the main stage has been used since the Oct. 26 fire, which started when some lights were left too close to a curtain.
"The Rock Hill Fire Department responded immediately and extinguished the fire, sparing considerable damage," said Vorder Bruegge. "The Winthrop University Facilities Management Office followed up with excellent work to restore, repair and replace the damaged equipment in the theatre. Everyone is our department is very grateful that we suffered so little damages from a situation that could have been a major disaster."
Johnson Hall closed for the weekend of the fire so repairs could be made and the smoke odor removed. The curtain and some lighting systems needed to be replaced.
The Nov. 14 concert will feature a variety of modern dance pieces choreographed by nine resident faculty and guest artists. A reception in the Johnson lobby will follow the performance.
The dance concert also will be performed on Nov. 15-18 at 8 p.m. The Nov. 15 performance also has a special 2-for-1 offer. Buy one ticket and get one free.
Ticket prices are $8 for those with a Winthrop ID and $15 for the general public. Patrons should contact the Box Office to reserve tickets at 803/323-4014.
