Winthrop Celebrates Student Successes This Week

Quick Facts

Traffic may be heavy at commencement events on Thursday night and Saturday morning.
Those who can't attend may want to watch the ceremony online. See webcast link below.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop will hold two commencement events this week at the Winthrop Coliseum.

On Thursday at 7 p.m., Winthrop University will confer master’s degrees to more than 160 students. During an 11 a.m. ceremony on Saturday, university officials will present bachelor’s degrees to more than 560 students. Doors will open for the event at 9 a.m.

Traffic is expected to be heavy for both events so Rock Hill residents may want to stay away from the coliseum area during those times. Winthrop Campus Police and Rock Hill police officers will work together in getting the graduate’s families and friends in and out of the coliseum as quickly as possible.

On Saturday, officers will be posted at Cherry and Bradley, Cherry and Richmond, Eden Terrace and Richmond, and Eden Terrace and Bradley. There should be plenty of parking at the coliseum, according to Campus Police. Families who park at area businesses risk having their vehicle towed.

In other graduation news, Winthrop officials announced:

• Due to H1N1 flu concerns, guests who are experiencing flu-like symptoms may want to stay at home, as well as individuals who may be susceptible to the flu, including small children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems. Stations with antibacterial liquid hand soap will be available on the coliseum’s concourse for guests.

• Those guests who can’t attend the ceremonies may want to watch the events on their computer. There will be a link on the Winthrop homepage at www.winthrop.edu to commencement. Below are links to download free Windows Media Player software in case your computer doesn’t have the software or its latest version. Please note that the live stream will not work with dial-up access.

The video stream will be activated a few minutes before each ceremony.  An archive of each ceremony will be available on the Winthrop Web next week at the commencement links below.

• Those guests traveling to Saturday’s commencement through York may want to avoid the S.C. 5 Bypass due to the York Electric Cooperative’s annual meeting from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
