ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop alumni, students and friends will relive the Roaring Twenties and celebrate Eagles pride during Homecoming 2009 Feb. 23-28.
Homecoming 2009 will kick off with 7 p.m. women’s and men’s basketball games on Monday, Feb. 23, and Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Winthrop Coliseum and a 4 p.m. baseball game Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Winthrop Ballpark.
Then the 1920s will come alive at the Roaring Twenties Dinner on Feb. 25 from 4-7 p.m. in Thomson Café. Participants can learn the dances of the era – including the Charleston and the Lindy Hop – on Friday, Feb. 27, during free dance lessons at 7:30 p.m. in Tuttle Dining Room. The festivities continue on Feb. 27 with “Let the Good Times Roll,” a free party held 9 p.m.-midnight in McBryde Hall that will include a costume contest, a free photo booth, free food and music by the Voltage Brothers.
Additional Eagles-themed events include baseball games on Feb. 27 (4 p.m.) and Saturday, Feb. 28 (noon, 3:30 p.m.); a basketball game on Feb. 28 (2 p.m.) with free tailgating until game time in Winthrop Coliseum lots and alumni check in/T-shirt giveaways from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; a free dodgeball tournament Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Lois Rhame West Health, Physical Education and Wellness Center; and the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the West Center ($25; call 803/323-2129, ext. 6218, for tickets).
Feb. 27 is Garnet and Gold Friday, so students, friends and alumni are encouraged to wear garnet and gold to show Eagles support.
Winthrop will host a second homecoming Nov. 14 as part of a plan to transition to a fall homecoming.
