ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Charlotte region’s premiere contemporary chamber music ensemble, the Out of Bounds Ensemble, will present two concerts of new and established music for chamber ensemble in September.

The first concert will take place on the campus of Central Piedmont Community College in Bryant Hall, Sloan Building room 101, on Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and the second at Winthrop University on Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. in Barnes Recital Hall.

Both concerts will feature performances of two new works by Charlotte area composers Craig Bove of Central Piedmont Community College, and Leonard Mark Lewis of Winthrop University. The two new works were written specifically for the Out of Bounds Ensemble.

Also on the program is Winthrop faculty member Tomoko Deguchi, who will perform a recent solo piano work by Winthrop composer Ronald Keith Parks. Rounding out the program are two established works by American composers Morton Feldman and Edgar Varèse. The concert at Central Piedmont Community College is free and open to the public.

The Winthrop concert is presented as part of the Friends of the Conservatory series. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for Winthrop students with ID and are available through Winthrop's Department of Music at 803/323-2255 or at the door. Members of the Friends of the Conservatory are admitted free of charge.

The Out of Bounds Ensemble was formed earlier this year under the guidance of Deguchi, Winthrop’s pianist and music theorist. It is the new music ensemble-in-residence at both Winthrop and Central Piedmont.

The founding members are Deguchi – piano, Lewis – composer/piano, Bove – composer, Parks – composer, and Geoff Whitehead – conductor/tuba. They formed the ensemble in order to bring established contemporary works for chamber ensemble to a wider audience in the Charlotte region and to encourage the creation and performance of new music by regional composers.

In addition to the core members, the upcoming concerts will feature local musicians Judy Meister – violin, Nick Lampo – cello, Reese Manceaux – clarinet, and Amy Orsinger-Whitehead – flute.

For more information on the upcoming concerts or the Out of Bounds Ensemble, contact Deguchi at 803/323-2602 or at deguchit@winthrop.edu.
