ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present “Step on a Crack,” a student-directed and student-designed production of Susan Zeder’s play, Oct. 29-31 at 8 p.m., Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. at Johnson Studio Theatre.

Directed by theatre major Amanda Roberts, a native of Lexington, “Step on a Crack” explores the story of 10-year-old Ellie Murphy (Cecily Bigham, Merrimac, Mass.), who finds her relationship with her widowed father Max (David Fichter, Midlothian, Va.) strained when he marries Lucille (Kayla Piscatelli, Groveland, Mass.). Confused and angry, Ellie confides in her two imaginary friends: Lana (Erin Lee, Lexington) and Frizbee (Josh Walker, Barnwell). Though the Voice of Ellie (Julie Hammond, Summerville) insists Lucille will replace Ellie in her father’s life, the child struggles to make peace with her new stepmother and accept her into the family.

Roberts said she wanted to direct “Step on a Crack” to “provide a different style and experience in theatre” that would reach the entire audience.

“I think it is important for everyone to experience certain moments in their childhood that made them happiest,” Roberts added. “This particular show can apply to anyone, young or old, and we can all pull our own message from it.”

The “Step on a Crack” production team includes Department of Theatre and Dance faculty members Stephen Gundersheim, faculty supervisor, and costumer Janet Gray, design supervisor; and students Katie Manley of Athens, Ga., stage manager; Caitlyn Baldwin of Charleston, props designer; Nat Kinney of Rock Hill, set designer; Mary Reading of Sumter, costume designer; Jacci Deininger of Summerville, lighting designer; and Amy Evans of Florence, sound designer.

For performances on Oct. 29-31, tickets are $8 with student ID and $15 for the general public. All tickets for the Nov. 1-2 performances are $5 each.
