ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Winthrop University has contracted with R. William Funk and Associates to assist with the search for its 11th president.

The Board of Trustees finalized on Oct. 3 a contract with the Dallas, Texas-based higher education consulting firm for $100,000 plus administrative and direct out of pocket expenses which will cover the search process as well as travel expenses. The Winthrop Foundation will provide up to $140,000 to help fund the search.

Plans are underway for founder R. William Funk to talk with Winthrop faculty, staff, students and community members next week to gain input on the university's next leader. Those groups, as well as alumni, friends and supporters, will have the opportunity to make suggestions online on a website to be announced later.

Funk, who has a strong record of success including presidential placements at the University of South Carolina and Clemson University, will use the information and feedback to research candidates who would be a good fit for Winthrop.

Kathy Bigham as chair and Dr. John Bird, professor of English, as co-chair, will lead the search process.

Bigham said board members were impressed with Funk and Associates' credentials. "We want a search firm that understands our institutional needs and then can find a good match," said Bigham. "Mr. Funk has a wonderful reputation and a lot of credibility in communicating a university's particular needs in order to find eminently well-qualified candidates."
