ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA -- Shakespeare Carolina brings one of William Shakespeare's most popular plays to life during Winthrop University's Welcome Week. The drama of the star-crossed lovers unfolds beginning Aug. 21 at Winthrop's Amphitheatre under the stars, as it was intended.

"Romeo & Juliet" will run at 8 p.m. Aug. 21 - 24 and Aug. 28-31. It's a timeless story of young passions caught between the feuding families of Capulet and Montague.

The cast features Shakespeare Carolina veterans Caryn Crye as Juliet and Nathan Kelly Rouse as Romeo. Other cast members include Manu Barbe as the Prince of Verona, Nathan Morris and Kelly Ogden as Lord and Lady Montague, S. Wilson Lee as Lord Capulet, Maggie Monahan as Lady Capulet, Jimmy Cartee as Mercutio, Katie Bearden as Tybalt, Charles Holmes as Benvolio, Norman Jamal Burt as Friar Lawrence and Amy Hilliard as the Nurse.

Shakespeare Carolina's different take on the classic takes inspiration from the video games "Assassin's Creed" and "Prince of Persia" with swords, poisonous potions, heroic men and femmes fatales.

Romeo and Juliet's title and themes populate dozens of ballets and operas, along with untold numbers of music and fine art interpretations. It has inspired countless theatrical stagings and more than 60 TV and film adaptations.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students with an ID and seniors and $2.50 for Winthrop Welcome Week Pass holders. Advanced tickets are available online.
