ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - S.C. Governor Nikki Haley has appointed Winthrop University faculty member Judy Thomas to the South Carolina Panel for Dietetics.
Thomas, an instructor with the university's Department of Human Nutrition, was confirmed by the S.C. Senate for the college/university seat this summer and will serve until 2015.
The panel oversees the licensing of registered dietitians/nutritionists in the state and handles complaints from the public regarding unlicensed persons who practice medical nutrition therapy.
Thomas has worked in the field of nutrition and dietetics for 30 years. In addition to positions in academia, Thomas has professional experience in a wide range of areas including dialysis centers, home health agencies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, nutrition education in the public schools, and in public health with chronic disease prevention and special needs children.
As a full-time faculty member since 1994, Thomas teaches courses in human nutrition, food composition, and cultural perspectives in food and nutrition.
She holds a bachelor's degree in nutrition and foods from West Virginia University and a master's degree in human nutrition and foods from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
