ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — A machete, a magic lantern, James Dean: what do they all have in common? Answer: they’re all part of “Out of the Box: Odd and Fascinating Artifacts,” the newest exhibit at Winthrop University’s Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections.

The exhibit includes more than 100 items that are all part of the Archives’ holdings and are a little unusual, to say the least. In addition to the machete and lantern, captivating pieces include cuneiform tablets, medieval manuscripts, exquisite needlework, 17th century paintings and items relating to several past U.S. presidents, among others.

The exhibit will end Aug. 28. Archives hours are 8-5:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-noon on Friday through Aug. 1. Beginning Aug. 2, hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Appointments are required for Friday afternoons.

Special Saturday hours will be July 19 and Aug. 2 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
