ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - At the June 26 meeting of the Winthrop University Board of Trustees, members voted to make changes to the board’s bylaws that will enhance its oversight of Winthrop. The board has been considering bylaws revisions since its February retreat.

Among the approved changes were those related to the board’s standing committees, as described in Articles III and IV:

• The Committee on Academic Affairs’ name was changed to the Committee on Academic Quality at the request of the committee chair and with support of Acting President and Provost Debra Boyd.
• The Committee on Student Life was renamed the Committee on Student Life and Athletics to more clearly recognize the important role of Winthrop’s NCAA athletics programs.
• One committee was added to reflect institutional priorities and organizational changes. The Committee on Enrollment and Retention was created to reflect this area as a board priority in coming years.
• A Committee on Compensation also was approved as a standing committee to review compensation of the president and, upon recommendation of the president, the compensation of executive officers and other senior academic and administrative officers. In addition, the committee will review any extraordinary salary and payment arrangements for university employees. This committee’s operating guidelines will be determined upon further discussion and input from the acting president.

“Each year we review the board’s bylaws and, if warranted, amend them in an effort to enhance this group’s work. These revisions will help us work better as a board and apply standard best practices that will allow us to more effectively serve Winthrop,” said Board Chair Kathy Bigham.
