ROCK HILL, S.C. – Twenty-six students from 14 S.C. colleges and universities visited the Winthrop University campus this week as part of the second annual NEW Leadership Summer Institute.

The women arrived Saturday and will participate in activities until Wednesday as they network about leadership opportunities and public affairs. One of the purposes of the institute is to encourage the women to consider careers in public service.

Despite recent gains, South Carolina ranks 49th in the nation in the percentage of women in its state legislature, and women are under-represented on public boards and commissions.

"We want to ensure the next generation of women is ready to serve in every facet of public life," said Katarina Moyon, co-director of the John C. West Forum on Politics and Policy at Winthrop. “We know that across the United States new leadership has had an impact in women's engagement in civic and political life. We are working to ensure it has the same impact in South Carolina.”
