Student-Athlete and Biology Major Hannah Hadaway Receives Tillman Award

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop track and field runner Hannah Hadaway received the Tillman Award at the May 10 Commencement.

The Rural Retreat, Va., resident was among more than 600 students who received degrees including 38 student-athletes at the ceremony at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The Tillman Award, established in 1940 to honor former S.C. Governor Benjamin Ryan Tillman, is presented to the student in the graduating class with the highest cumulative grade point average.

Hadaway received her degree in biology during Saturday's Commencement and plans to attend graduate school in pharmacy. She was one of seven student-athletes in the Big South Conference given a George A. Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence.

The last Winthrop student-athlete to receive the Tillman Award was tennis player Patricia Coimbra in 2009.

Among the 38 student-athletes receiving degrees, 13 of them graduated with honors. Six student-athletes graduated Cum Laude (3.50-3.69 GPA), four graduated Magna Cum Laude (3.70-3.89 GPA) and three graduated Summa Cum Laude (3.90-4.00 GPA).
