Commencements Take Center Stage This Week at Winthrop Coliseum

 More than 230 individuals will be recognized for earning their master’s or specialist degrees during a 7 p.m. hooding ceremony on Thursday.
 On Saturday, about 660 students will receive their bachelor’s degree at the 11 a.m. Undergraduate Commencement event in a packed Coliseum. Giving the keynote speech and receiving an honorary degree will be Cecelia "Cece" Stewart ’93, who recently retired from Citigroup as one of the nation’s top female bankers.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Commencement approaches for nearly 900 Winthrop University students who will receive their degrees either on Thursday, May 8 or Saturday, May 10 at Winthrop Coliseum.

More than 230 individuals will be recognized for earning their master’s or specialist degrees during a 7 p.m. hooding ceremony on Thursday. Associate Professor of Social Work Sue Lyman also will receive the 2014 Jane LaRoche Graduate Faculty Award.

On Saturday, about 660 students will receive their bachelor’s degree at the 11 a.m. Undergraduate Commencement event in a packed Coliseum. Giving the keynote speech and receiving an honorary degree will be Cecelia "Cece" Stewart ’93, who recently retired from Citigroup as one of the nation’s top female bankers. With 35 years of experience in the banking field, Stewart was president of U.S. consumer and commercial banking for Citigroup.

Winthrop President Jamie Comstock Williamson will present three faculty and student awards. Laura Dufresne, a professor in the Department of Fine Arts within the College of Visual and Performing Arts, has been selected as the 2014 Distinguished Professor of the Year. Nicholas E. Grossoehme, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Geology, is the 2014 Outstanding Junior Professor of the Year. The student with the highest GPA will receive the Tillman Award.

Guests who can’t attend this week’s graduation ceremonies may want to watch the events on a computer. There will be a link in the bottom left corner of the homepage to the live stream video of Commencement.

The video stream will be activated half an hour before each ceremony. An archive of each ceremony will be available on the Winthrop web site next week at the Commencement links below.
