WISE Summer Interns Selected for Three-Week Program

 The students will spend from May 11- 30 working with a variety of Winthrop faculty members exploring topics in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) research and education, taking field trips and volunteering at South Middle School in Lancaster and York Comprehensive High School in York.
 The three-week experience is designed to allow these students to explore a variety of opportunities that exist in these fields and to encourage them to be leaders and learners for a lifetime.

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Fifteen Winthrop University and York Technical College students have been selected to participate in the 2014 Winthrop Initiative for STEM Educators (WISE) Summer Internship.

The students will spend from May 11- 30 working with a variety of Winthrop faculty members exploring topics in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) research and education, taking field trips and volunteering at South Middle School in Lancaster and York Comprehensive High School in York. The three-week experience is designed to allow these students to explore a variety of opportunities that exist in these fields and to encourage them to be leaders and learners for a lifetime.

“The WISE Internship provides an invaluable first glimpse at research and a focus on what all citizens can do to support public education in meaningful ways,” said Beth Greene Costner, an organizer and associate dean for the College of Arts and Sciences. “This fourth group of WISE interns brings our numbers to nearly 60 students who have been impacted by the experience and who are in turn making a difference in their communities through graduate study, teaching, community service and campus leadership roles.”

Participating Winthrop faculty members are: Cassandra Bell, Janice Chism, Kelly Costner, Victoria Frost, Nick Grossoehme, Lisa Hudson-Lucas, Trent Kull, Linda Pickett and Jane Wilkes.

The 2014 WISE interns from Winthrop are: Alison Tighe, Camerun Washington, Jeffrey McDaniel, Jessica Tesney, Julia Poppell, Katelyn Evans, Leigha Stahl, Lindsay Bradley, Macey Bosley, Michelle Corley, Mikala Smith, Savannnah Moritzky and TianeeHarris. From York Tech participating are John Cagle and William Alewine.
