ROCK HILL, S.C. - The College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina and John C. West Forum on Politics and Policy at Winthrop University will co-host a leadership opportunity for female students in May.

The second annual NEW Leadership™ South Carolina Summer Institute will teach college women about leadership and public affairs and encourage them to consider careers in public service.

NEW Leadership originated at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. Organizers will select about 20-25 young women for this year's five-day program held on the Winthrop campus.

The NEW Leadership application deadline is April 1.

Despite recent gains, South Carolina ranks 49th in the nation in the percentage of women in its state legislature, and women are underrepresented on public boards and commissions. "We want to ensure the next generation of women is ready to serve in every facet of public life," said Katarina Moyon, co-director of the West Forum. "We encourage women of all ideological perspectives, fields of study, regions of the state, and racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds to apply."

The program fee is $250 per person. The fee covers housing, food, on-campus parking, and all program materials for the four days of the Institute. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Summer Institute.

A limited number of $125 scholarships are available from the West Forum.

For more information or to apply, contact Moyon at moyonk@winthrop.edu or check the NEW Leadership web site.
